Advanced Settings Deep Dive – Network

Configure and manage how your video source communicates with Hive over your network using static IP, DHCP, and ONVIF controls.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Overview

The Network tab in Hive Studio’s Advanced Settings provides access to essential IP configuration and network communication features for your video sources. These settings help define how your camera or encoder communicates with your Hive Bridge and broader studio environment, ensuring stability, discoverability, and protocol compliance.

This article walks through configuring IP addresses, enabling ONVIF support, and when to use DHCP vs. static addressing.

Navigating to the Network Tab

  1. Open Hive and choose your organization and studio.

  2. In the Source Tray, click the gear icon (⚙️) on the video source you want to adjust.

  3. In the Advanced Settings window, click the “Network” tab along the top row.

Network Configuration Options

IP Configuration: Static or DHCP

You can set how your source receives its IP address on your network:

  • DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

Your device is assigned an IP address automatically by your network’s DHCP server (usually your router or managed switch).

    • Best for simple, flexible setups

    • Not ideal for devices that must be reliably found at the same IP

  • Static IP (Recommended for Hive best practice)

Manually assign an IP address to the device.

    • Ideal for production environments where sources must remain on known, fixed addresses

    • Useful for port forwarding, NDI routing, and advanced network tools

When using static IP, ensure the chosen IP is outside your router/switch’s DHCP range to avoid conflicts.

ONVIF Support

ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) is a global standard for IP-based video devices that enables interoperability between network cameras, NVRs, and control software.

Hive supports ONVIF discovery and control for devices that are compliant.

  • Enable ONVIF Communication – Allows Hive to detect and interact with ONVIF-compatible sources.

  • Enable ONVIF Authentication – Requires a username and password for ONVIF communication.

Credentials are typically configured in the camera’s web UI and should match what Hive uses to communicate.

The Network tab in Advanced Settings allows you to establish consistent, reliable communication between your camera and Hive. Whether you're operating on a plug-and-play setup with DHCP or configuring a robust studio using static IP and ONVIF authentication, these tools ensure that your video sources are always connected, discoverable, and aligned with professional standards.

NOTE and WARNING: Changing network settings or the IP Address on your device may cause it to disconnect. Be absolutely sure that you wish to make the changes before committing and do not make these changes during a live production.
